Burundi’s First Lady Denise Nkurunziza has returned to Burundi after staying in Kenya for almost two weeks.

She had been evacuated to Agha Khan Hospital on May 27th and was receiving treatment for coronavirus.

However, an official in Burundi President’s office has denied that she had contracted covid-19.

The First Lady landed at Melchior Ndadaye International Airport in Bujumbura on Tuesday evening.

According to Burundi media, “Denise Bucumi Nkurunziza arrived on board a non-medicalised flight by the Kenyan private company Phoenix. It was a jet with the captain and the co-pilot only”.

The First Lady has returned to Burundi two days after the announcement of the death of her husband outgoing President Pierre Nkurunziza.

The outgoing President died from a heart attack at the age of 55. He passed away at the Karusi Fiftieth Anniversary Hospital.

Pierre Nkuruniziza had been admitted in hospital but his health deteriorated over the weekend.

Burundi will observe 7 days of mourning and the country’s flags will fly at half-mast during this duration.

On Wednesday, Raila consoled the Burundians and said he would pray for them.

“I wish the people of Burundi peace, hope and stability at this moment of mourning following the death of President Pierre Nkurunziza. Our thoughts are with the First Family. May Burundi’s institutions stand firmly for the country and the people,” the former opposition leader said.

Before his demise, President Nkurunziza ordered one World Health Organization (WHO) representative and three other experts to leave the country.

The experts coordinated the response to the coronavirus pandemic in Burundi in an effort to curb the spread of the virus.

President Nkurunziza had received criticism for not doing enough to prevent the spread of coronavirus in Burundi.

Currently, Burundi has announced 83 cases of coronavirus and one death after the person succumbed to the disease.
