No Kenyan living in China contracted the dreaded coronavirus, Kenya Ambassador to Beijing Sarah Serem has said.

In a recorded video, Serem says she witnessed “the apex of coronavirus back in China when anxiety and restlessness literally turned this vibrant country upside down”.

“We have come a long way as the Kenyan community here in China. We are happy to note that none of our citizens was infected by the deadly virus. We are grateful to the Almighty God for bringing us this far,” Serem says in the undated video.

“Two months down the line, we can breathe a sigh of relief. It took China a strong united system and a very disciplined society that followed the laid down procedures very diligently,” she adds.

The former chairperson of the Salaries and remuneration Commission says it is possible to subdue Covid-19.

Today I join my fellow Kenyans for the #NationalDayOfPrayer, sharing a message of hope and encouragement.

“China is almost there… Stay calm and follow all the preventive measures diligently,” she advises.

In January, Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said 85 Kenyans were stuck in Wuhan, China, the epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The embassy is aware that there are 85 Kenyans in Wuhan who are registered with the embassy and is closely monitoring the situation,” the ministry said in a press statement.

Serem notes that the call by President Uhuru Kenyatta to call for a national prayer day today over the coronavirus pandemic is no ordinary call.

She says with her team in Beijing, they will join in the prayers “persuaded that the God who delivered us in China will surely deliver Kenya”.
