President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday night called on the community of nations to vote for Kenya as Africa’s representative for the UNSC non-permanent today.
“Trust in us, stand with us, we will ensure no one is left behind.” President Kenyatta urged UN member states.
“We want you to believe in us. We want you to trust in us. We want you to see our track record over the years. Stand with us as Kenya stands with you,” the President lobbied.
He spoke during a virtual reception to wrap up the official Kenya’s campaign for the United Nations Security Council seat 2021-22.
Kenya seeks to join the Security Council because of her commitment and believe that she can make a positive contribution to global peace and security.
Uhuru said Kenya will advance the pan-Africanist agenda of global peace, solidarity and multilateralism if elected to join the United Nations Security Council
“I speak to you from Nairobi. Your only global capital in the South where the UN resides taking care of our environment and our habitat,” President Kenyatta said.
He added that the country’s peace keeping missions have been to every part of the globe where they “joined hands with others to bring peace and, bring communities and nations together”.
Uhuru said “A vote for Kenya is a vote for peace. A vote for Kenya is a vote for global solidarity. A vote for Kenya is a vote for multilateralism”, which has also been the rallying call by the Foreign Affairs ministry.
Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amb Raychelle Omamo called for “solidarity that encapsulates the spirit of the UN Charter”, adding that Kenya is ready and able to serve in the United Nations Security Council.
“The endorsement of Kenya as the African Union candidate for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council is a high calling which we accept with gratitude and a deep sense of purpose. A vote for Kenya is a vote for global solidarity,” Omamo said in the virtual reception.
“Kenya’s candidature is anchored in the enduring hope that together we can create a better world,” CS Omamo added.
ODM leader Raila Odinga, who is also AU’s High-level envoy for Infrastructure Development, asked the world to stand with Kenya.
“Kenya has served the community of nations with dedication and grace; hosting refugees, sending peace keepers to troubled lands, ensuring regional stability. Our Athletes are a shared Pride. We seek to continue this tradition of service via a UN seat. May the World stand with Us,” Raila tweeted on Wednesday.
