Kenyan international Victor Wanyama has left Tottenham Hotspurs for Montreal Impact.
The club announced on Tuesday that it had come to terms with the midfielder and team captain Victor Wanyama as a Designated Player, following a free transfer with the English club. He signed a three-year contract and will join the club upon receiving his international transfer certificate and passing his medical.
“The Lion is coming to @MLS, I’m really happy to join an exciting club like @impactmontreal I believe the Saputo family, @ThierryHenry and the management at @impactmontreal have a great plan in place and I hope I can make a great contribution to the success of this project,” Wanyama tweeted.
I want to thank @SpursOfficial fans for all the support over these past years, we have shared great times together from finishing 2nd in EPL to reaching the champions league finals, I will always be grateful for having been able to play for @SpursOfficial #COYS,” he added.
Wanyama will now be coached by Arsenal’s great Thierry Henry.
The Montreal Impact previously had acquired the discovery rights to Victor Wanyama from the New England Revolution in exchange for $150,000 in 2020 General Allocation Money.
“Victor is an important player with a great career,” Sporting Director Olivier Renard said.
“His undeniable experience will also help support the young players and help them progress.”
Wanyama fell out of favour for the fired Mauricio Pochettino, who said he doesn’t owe anybody a favour when it comes to team selection. He was his regular in the previous season.
