Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) listed some substandard hand sanitizers in the market on 17th May via twitter. KEBS revealed it had conducted thorough testing of hand sanitizers in the market and had discovered there were substandard products being sold to Kenyans.

“Following consistent market surveillance and testing of hand sanitizers in the market, Kenya Bureau of Standards has noted that several brands being manufactured/offered for sale do not meet the requirements of Kenya Standards,” KEBS said through a statement on twitter.

Moreover, KEBS named all the 8 brands of hand sanitisers that did not reach the requirements of Kenya standard specification for Instant Hand Sanitizers.

The brands listed were: Alphax, Clean Essentials, G&L, Gentle Care, Lili, Msiri, Shi shi Natural and Spotless Advanced.

The body also suspended standardization Permits for the brands. However, KEBS said the suspension of permits may be lifted after the mentioned brands have reviewed their products and implemented the necessary changes.

“The manufacturers are required to recall all the substandard sanitizers from the market and institute corrective actions whose effectiveness shall be confirmed by KEBS before the suspension of permits is lifted. KEBS shall then inform the public once the products have met the requirements of the Kenya standards to ensure they are safe and of good quality,” the statement reads.

KEBS is the body tasked with issuing standardization mark permits to manufacturers for products that have complied with approved standards. The standardization body warned manufacturers who were selling low quality products to Kenyans. It also encouraged Kenyans to be on the lookout for substandard products.

“KEBS shall continue to undertake market surveillance and factory inspections. Substandard products found will be seized for destruction at the expense of the owner in addition to any other legal action as provided under the law,” KEBS added.
