“Saying farewell to Rt Hon @RailaOdinga this morning. It was good to hear him say, as the UK has also done, that leaders charged with corruption need to step aside from their offices, including those Governors who have been indicted,” Hailey said.

This is a position held by the UK government and Hailey in March said the government should scale up the war on corruption buy jailing individuals involved in corruption.

He spoke during the Sixth Devolution Conference in Kirinyaga. He particularly pointed out that any leader or county official indicted for corruption should stand aside while their case is being determined.

During the conference, governors themselves resolved to have those charged in court in relation to corruption step aside.

Currently, more than 30 former and current governors are set to face corruption charges as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission embarks on reviving all stalled cases.

The Senate has also summoned numerous governors over audit queries, among them Mike Sonko (Nairobi), Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Mwangi Wairia (Murang’a), Okoth Obado (Migori and Ferdinand Waititu (Kiambu), among others.

Others have been arrested and charged over corruption among them Samuel Lenolkulal (Samburu) and Sospeter Ojaamong (Busia).
