President William Ruto on Saturday received a personal letter from his Algerian counterpart, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, at State House Nairobi.
In a statement on Sunday, Ruto said the letter was delivered by President Tebboune’s special envoy Mohamed Meziane, who is Algeria’s Minister of Communication.
The Special Envoy was accompanied by Algeria’s candidate for Vice-Chair of the African Union Commission, Ambassador Selma Hadadi.
“Kenya and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria have, over the years, enjoyed cordial diplomatic relations, buttressed by mutual commitment to Pan-Africanism and the need for the progress of our two nations. We will continue strengthening these ties to boost trade, investment and people-to-people contacts,” the President said on X.
The meeting underscored Algeria’s commitment to deepening its ties with Kenya, and reflected the growing importance of African solidarity in addressing regional and continental challenges.
In an official statement, Algeria’s Ministry of Communication said in the letter, President Tebboune conveyed “his warm fraternal greetings and reaffirmed Algeria’s steadfast desire to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation with Kenya”.
SHARED VISION FOR STRONGER TIES
The discussions provided an opportunity to exchange views on various dimensions of the bilateral relationship between Algeria and Kenya, the ministry said.
“Both parties explored pathways to broaden their collaboration in areas of mutual interest, aligning with the strategic vision of Presidents Tebboune and Ruto to elevate the Algeria-Kenya partnership to new heights,” the statement added.
A key focus of the dialogue was on enhancing cooperation across sectors to foster sustainable development and address common challenges.
“The meeting served as a platform to examine means of opening broader perspectives for relations between the two countries,” stated the communiqué.
AU AND INSTITUTIONAL REFORMS
The meeting also delved into continental issues, particularly the need for institutional reform within the African Union.
Both leaders underscored the urgency of pursuing dialogue and coordination on pivotal African matters to enhance the organization’s efficacy and unity.
Reaffirming their commitment to a cohesive African agenda, Meziane and Ruto stressed the importance of permanent consultation and coordination between Algeria and Kenya.
Their discussion highlighted the shared belief that collaboration between African nations is essential for fostering peace, stability, and prosperity across Africa.
