Kenya’s permanent representative to the UN in Geneva Cleopa Mailu was sent to represent Health CS Sicily Kariuki in The Netherlands on Wednesday. Mailu is former Health Cabinet Secretary but was demoted to the position of Ambassador when President Uhuru Kenyatta dropped him, among others, in his second term in office. Ambassadors report to Foreign Affairs CS.
“Amb. Dr. Cleopa Mailu representing the Cabinet Secretary for Health @MOH_Kenya at the Second Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance- Accelerating Ambitions for Future Health, Noordwijk 18-20 June ‘19- The Netherlands,” Kenya Mission in UN, Geneva, tweeted on Wednesday.
The conference seeks to explore what has been done since the first meeting that was organised five years ago, and to take further steps to accelerate the implementation of the Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance.
The aim of the conference is to strengthen and accelerate international cooperation in the global fight against antimicrobial resistance, while the focus will be international and multi-sectoral cooperation through the One Health approach.
It was opened by Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of The Netherlands and Carola Schouten Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, The Netherlands.
There were unconfirmed reports that Mailu was not enthusiastic about the appointment, and considered turning it down.
Former Constitutional Affairs adviser to the President Abdikadir Mohamed and former Mandera Central MP turned down his appointment as ambassador to South Korea.
