Tanzania President Hassan directs Foreign Affairs ministry to enhance diplomatic relations

Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan

Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan has directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote relations with other states.

Addressing government officials on Tuesday at State House Dar es Salam, President Hassan said the ministry should ensure Tanzania is on the same page with other countries, and also noted the importance of relations between Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.

Among those who attended were the Prime Minister, principal secretaries and their deputies as well as various parastatal heads.

Last Wednesday, President Hassan made changes in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, transferring Foreign minister Palamagamba Kabudi to the less lucrative Constitutional and Legal Affairs ministry.

Ambassador Liberata Mulamula, who was Foreign Affairs permanent secretary in President Jakaya Kikwete’s government until 2015, was promoted to replace Kabudi.

Ambassador Mulamula has more than 35 years of diplomatic affairs experience in the Tanzanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and regional cooperation.

She has served as Tanzania’s Ambassador to the United Nations in New York, Canada and the US.

Before her retirement from the diplomatic service in April 2016, she served as the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, for a period of seven months, between May until December 2015.

She also served as the first Executive Secretary of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), in Bujumbura, Burundi, from 2006 until 2011. In this role, she oversaw Peace, Stability and Development in 11 countries in the African Great Lakes Region.

During the state funeral of President John Magufuli, Hassan committed to pay in kind the good that Tanzanian neighbours demonstrated during the mourning of their leader.

“We will enhance and promote our relations with our neighbours. Tanzania will continue to be a good neighbour and an important ally in regional and international cooperation. Our ties will continue to be good and even get better under my leadership,” President Suluhu said.

Tanzania has had frosty relations with her neighbours, particularly Kenya, and has not committed to the EAC.

Hassan has been the representative of Tanzania in international fora, which Magufuli mostly snubbed.
