Devolution is one of the great achievements of the last years, and a great asset for development in Kenya, Switzerland Ambassador to Kenya has said.

Ambassador Valentin Zellweger said this after a meeting with Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa on Monday, February 22.

He said the meeting focussed on  federalism, devolution and the Switzerland cooperation with Frontier Counties Development Council .

“Held consultations this afternoon with Swiss Ambassador H E Valentin Zellweger on Kenya’s transformative Devolution journey towards a more Just,Equitable, inclusive and Prosperous Society,” Wamalwa said in a tweet.

FCDC is a regional economic bloc composed of the county governments of Lamu, Tana River, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, Isiolo, Turkana, Samburu and West Pokot.

It was formed in March 2016, when governors from seven counties signed a memorandum of understanding. The composition has since grown from 7-member counties to 10 as of September 2018.

The embassy of Switzerland has been working with the council to enhance development, especially in the marginalised counties of Northern Kenya.

The Swiss embassy in Nairobi coordinates the Horn of Africa cooperation strategy (2018–21), which has a CHF 170 million (Sh20.1 billion) budget.

“It is a regional strategy that mainly focuses on Somalia and the arid and semi-arid areas of Kenya and Ethiopia. Switzerland’s activities in the Horn of Africa concentrate on good governance, food security, health, migration and protection of the civilian population,” the Swiss embassy says.

The mission’s activities in Kenya focus on strengthening the resilience of agro-pastoralists and promoting long-term solutions for internally displaced people.
