Lang’ata Hospital Director and three others charged with stocking expired lab chemicals

Lang’ata Hospital Director Dr Ashoke Singh Matharu and three other employees were on Thursday charged with stocking expired lab reagents.

The other employees were Muffadal Ammar HassamJee (Operations Manager), Herbert Cheruiyot Charles (Lab Technician) and Beatrice Awino (Lab Technician).

According to court documents, the Lang’ata employees had expired bilirubin, combi 35, Ast Got, Actone, Area Bun/UV, Magnesium and Trigs against the Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Act.

The four pleaded not guilty and were released on bail. Ashoke and Ammar were released on sh100, 000 cash bail each while Cheruiyot and Awino were freed on sh50, 000 cash bail each.

On Wednesday, Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians raided Lang’ata laboratories and discovered that some technicians were colluding with others at KEMRI to conduct covid-19 tests.

It was also discovered that the facility was using expired reagents for testing the virus.
