Nairobi doctors down their tools


Nairobi Doctors have yet again decided that enough is enough.

The doctors issued a warning to strike if their demands are not met. The talks between the Nairobi Metropolitan Service and union officials failed.

The doctors downed their tools at midnight on Friday.

The doctors employed by the Nairobi County government are taking part in the strike because their demands have not been met. They demand their monthly salaries, adequate personal protective equipment (PPEs) for handling Covid-19 patients, promotion of senior doctors and a comprehensive medical cover.

Doctors that contract Covid-19 due to caring for patients that test positive forĀ  the Corona virus have to pay for their medical expenses through their own pockets.

The ministry of health said eight healthcare workers had died from COVID-19.

According to reports, doctors had not reported to Mbagathi hospital during the morning hours. The patients were waiting for doctors who were nowhere to be seen.

A KMPDU official stated that the strike will continue and the situation might become dire in hospital.

For instance, Mama Lucy Hospital that is accessed by people in Eastlands, Kangundo and Thika will suffer due to the strike.

Pumwani referral hospital is one of the biggest hospital that caters for pregnant women. Quit a number of women give birth in this hospital every day. Pregnant women might suffer as a result of the doctors strike.

Nairobi doctors join their counterparts who are also on strike in various counties.

One nurse in HomaBay revealed that patients are no longer visiting the public hospital due to the doctors strike. They instead opt for private hospitals where they will get treatment.
