Wajir Governor Mohamed Abdi impeachment upheld at Senate

Wajir Governor Mohamed Abdi Mohamud

Wajir Governor Mohamed Abdi Mohamud has been impeached.

This is after 25 senators on Monday voted to uphold his removal from office, while two voted against the impeachment. Four abstained.

The Senate select committee that investigated his impeachment recommended his removal for violating Article 43 of the Constitution.

The committee chaired by Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni found Governor Mohamud guilty of running down the healthcare system in the county thus compromising the right to health of the residents.

Mohamud, however, pleaded with the plenary to save him, saying the offence does not amount to gross violation of the Constitution.

Wajir MCAs in April impeached Mohamud for among other allegations, abuse of office, irregular expenditures and failure to update ward reps on the status of development projects.

Thirty-seven MCAs voted in favour of the motion out of the 45 ward reps.
