Sonko nominates Anne Kananu Mwenda as deputy governor, DPP faults move

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Monday nominated Anne Kananu Mwenda as the deputy governor.

In a letter to Speaker Beatrice Elachi, Sonko said the decision is in line with Article 180(5) of the Constitution and the Supreme Court advisory of March 2018 and that the move was motivated by the complexity of the situation in Nairobi following his charging last year.

“Given the foregoing, and in the interest of ensuring stability at Kenya’s capital city and the largest county by economy and population, I do hereby nominate Anne Kananu Mwenda to the position of Deputy Governor,” Sonko said.

The move was, however, faulted by DPP Noordin Haji who termed the decision to nominate a deputy as unacceptable.

” The court was clear on what Sonko cannot do.  To purport to have power to name a deputy while his case is still on is a violation of the bail terms given to him. We will move to court,” Haji said.

Speaker Elachi said she will consult the Attorney General on the matter and give directions.

Mwenda is the chief officer for Disaster and acting Water chief officer.
