Kenya has accused Russia of assaulting Ukraine’s integrity and territorial integrity.

In a statement at the UN Security Council Kenya’s Permanent Representative Ambassador Martin Kimani said the while Kenya has urged that diplomacy be given a chance, Russia’s move to recognise two separatist groups in Ukraine means the territorial integrity and sovereignty of of Ukraine stands breached.

“Our cry was not headed, and more importantly, the Charter’s demand for states to ‘settle their international disputes by peaceful means in such a manner that international peace and security and justice are not endangered’ has been profoundly undermined,” Ambassador Kimani said on Monday.

He further added that ‘the threat of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine’ has been effected.

Kimani added that Kenya is “gravely concerned” by the announcement by Russia to recognise Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine as independent states.

This is after Russia President Vladimir Putin signed the decree recognising independence of the two regions as well as a friendship and cooperation deal in the presence of the separatist leaders.

This has been met with condemnation by Nato and Western countries.

In a lengthy televised address with grievances against the West, President Putin said eastern Ukraine was ancient Russian land.

Putin delved into history as far back as the Ottoman empire and as recent as the tensions over NATO’s eastward expansion. His demands that Ukraine drop its long-term goal of joining the Atlantic military alliance have been repeatedly rebuffed by Kyiv and NATO states.

“I deem it necessary to make a decision that should have been made a long time ago – to immediately recognise the independence and sovereignty of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lugansk People’s Republic,” Putin said.

But Kamau said the security concerns in the region cannot justify Russia’s actions.

“We rejected irredentism and expansionism on any basis, including racial, ethnic, religion or cultural factors. We reject it again today” he concluded.
