On Friday, Safaricom announced it had partnered with media houses in Kenya to provide Newspapers worth Kshs20 per issue.

The new innovation will make newspapers available to all smartphone customers in the country. The cost of the newspaper will be deducted from a customer’s airtime.  This will enable Kenyans to buy newspapers daily and read them anywhere, anytime.

The initiative is part of Safaricom’s contribution in the fight against Covid-19 by empowering customers to conveniently access the newspapers even as they limit their movement.

The CEOs of The Standard Group, Nation Media Group and Safaricom have partnered in this collaborative effort to digitize newspaper channel and make them available on the mobile phone.

The newspapers that will be available from The Standard Group include; The Standard, Saturday Standard, Sunday Standard and The Nairobian.

Nation Media Group will have Daily Nation, Saturday Nation, Sunday Nation and The Business Daily.

How to access the Newspapers

“No registration or signup will be necessary neither will customers be requested to download and install any application,” reads the statement from Safaricom.

Interested Kenyans can access the newspapers by visiting safaricom.com and selecting the ‘Discover’ option. Next select the Newspapers upon which a customer will see newspapers available for purchase.

Moreover, a customer can purchase the newspaper by dialling *550# to purchase the newspapers.

Purchased publications will appear under “My Newspaper” tab for 7 days after purchase.

A customer’s data will not be used when reading through the newspaper issues. However, customers will need to have their data on when accessing the portal.

This is because each purchase is linked to their mobile phone number for ease of access.
