The president of the Law Society of Kenya Nelson Havi, said all advocates will be able to work during curfew hours. They will also be able to travel into and out of restricted counties while working. This will be possible by using special Essential Service Provider Identity cards

“Effective 19.5.2020, all advocates with Practicing Certificates will have this special Essential Service Provider Identity card in their portal. Print and laminate it. The card will enable you to move to and from work during curfew hours and within and out of restricted counties, ” Nelson Havi said.

The special Identity Cards contain the picture of the advocate, the ID number and the advocate’s admission number. The card also notifies all concerned parties that the card owner is allowed to move within and out of counties 24 hours a day.

“Pursuant to Orders issued in Petition number 120 of 2020 in the matter of LSK versus IGP the holder of this pass is categorized as a critical and essential service provider and is authorized to move within the country on 24-hour basis,” the card indicates.

People in the essential service category have been issued with special ID cards that allow them to provide essential services during this COVID-19 pandemic.

On 27th March, the president announced the beginning of a daily curfew that would begin from 5am to 7pm. Everyone who did not belong to the category of critical or essential service providers was not allowed to move during the curfew period.

Moreover, the president issued the directive on cessation of movement in and out of Nairobi Metropolitan Area as well as the counties of Mombasa, Kilifi and Kwale.

The directive was issued in a bid to flatten the curve of Corona virus cases in Kenya.

Essential service providers include Health workers, Licensed broadcasters and transporters of farm produce.
