According to Business Daily, the 5-star hotel based in Westlands will pay their employees redundancy fees before releasing them from duty.

Kempinski’s managing director understands that the move will affect a lot of employees in many departments.

However, he believes the move is necessary because it will “put the hotel on a firm footing and allow us to grow sustainably for the years to come,”

On Madaraka Day, President Uhuru noted how the tourism sector had been affected by coronavirus pandemic and ordered the release of Ksh2 billion to cushion the sector from the economic crisis.

Many hotels have been closed following the pandemic.

A few weeks ago, Fairmont Norfolk and Fairmont Mara Safari Club closed down business and fired all their employees.

“It is regrettable that our hotels, Fairmont the Norfolk and Fairmont Mara Safari Club have since ceased their operations as a spiral effect of the covid-19 pandemic and the recent flooding of Fairmont Mara Safari Club,” Fairmont Manager Mehdi Morad said.

The decision to close the hotels was made after covid-19 prevented them from carrying out their contractual obligations.

Moreover, Serena Hotel sent all staff on unpaid leave in June.

This is because of the ongoing covid-19 pandemic which has adversely affected all business operations in the country.

“All staff will from 1st June 2020 take unpaid leave until further notice. However, for the month of June 2020, staff will be paid an allowance of Kshs10, 000 only,” reads the memo from Serena Hotel Managing Director.

Moreover, essential staff who are required to be on duty on a regular basis will be paid 30% of their salary for the month of June 2020.
