All registered Kenyans in Ukraine are reported safe, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said.
Through a statement on Tuesday, the ministry said 79 Kenyans students had by February 28 been evacuated.
Out of these, 74 are in Poland (Warsaw, Krakovets, Katowice cities), two in Romania, two in Hungary, one is back to Kenya and four have shown no interest of leaving Ukraine citing personal reasons, the ministry said.
The students have been able to cross over to the neighbouring countries after the government negotiated for unrestricted entry of Kenyans into the neighboring EU states via simplified procedure.
The request was honored by Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania.
Kenya’s Honorary Consul in Kyiv Anatoliy Kovalenko is coordinating the evacuation of Kenyans via WhatsApp group “Kenya Evacuation”.
The ministry urged Kenyans who are still stranded to contact Kovalenko on +38 044 229 79 13 or via ak@kenyaconsul.com.
In a previous statement on February 25, the ministry said 201 Kenyans had been confirmed to be living in Ukraine, 183 of them being students.
Some students had travelled back home for various reasons by the time the Russian invasion happened.
The ministry said the WhatsApp coordinating the evacuation has approximately 100 students and members of the Kenyan diplomatic corps in various neighboring countries, officials from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nairobi, and student leaders.
“The objective is to ensure quick communication to handle unprecedented situation in Ukraine,” the statement said.
