Dr. Edwin Abonyo, the husband to the departed governor of Bomet, Joyce Laboso, has indicated that she will be buried in Kisumu. Speaking to the press, Dr. Abonyo shared that they had, as a family, made a decision to have Laboso’s final funeral rights take place at their Fort Ternan home, in Koru.
Luo elders had raised their concerns insisting that Dr. Joyce Laboso deserved to rest at the land of her husband, at least in accordance to Luo customary traditions.
Burial plans are already underway and preparations are taking place in various locations around the country including at her rural home in Sotik and her matrimonial residence at Koru.
Luo elders further asserted that her marriage came first ahead of her work life. Accordingly, the Koru was the most appropriate place to bury her remains.
There is no doubt that the issue is bound to raise variant responses in Kenya’s strongly opinionated spaces.
