The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East Africa Community (EAC) joint Summit on the eastern DRC situation has been set for Friday and Saturday in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
The meeting was proposed by the EAC Summit chaired by President William Ruto and confirmed by SADC under the chairship of Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Announcing the meeting, President William Ruto said Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan had agreed to host the summit, while DRC President Felix Tshisekedi, who missed the EAC meeting, and his Rwanda counterpart Paul Kagame had confirmed attendance.
The summit that will be preceded by a ministerial meeting on Friday before the Heads of State convene on Saturday.
President Ruto also confirmed that he had engaged President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa, Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni, and Hassan Mohamud of Somalia, and they confirmed participation.
Burundi Evariste Ndayishimiye will miss the meeting as he will be on a trip to the US.
“Peace and security are critical ingredients for trade and investment in our region. I am glad the leadership of the Southern African Development Community and the East Africa Community has agreed to jointly caucus on the conflict in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Through our collective effort, we will ensure security reigns in our continent,” President Ruto said.
