IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu has urged the new Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to form an inclusive Cabinet, and begin uniting the Somali people and tackle urgent national priorities
In his congratulatory statement on Monday, the Executive Secretary said Mohamud’s election on Sunday in Mogadishu marked a successful conclusion of the country’s election cycle and that the victory is a clear testimony of the trust and confidence that the people of Somalia have in his leadership qualities.

“The Executive Secretary expresses confidence that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud will move expeditiously to form an inclusive Cabinet, and begin the enormous task of uniting the Somali people and tackle other urgent national priorities, including preserving the security gains, sustain focus on fighting Al Shabaab, and addressing the dire humanitarian situation. IGAD stands ready to support the Government in this regard,” the statement said.
“IGAD, including its Organs and Institutions, pledge their continued support and look forward to working with you to deliver on your national priorities, and promote regional integration and development”, Dr Gebeyehu added in his message.
The Executive Secretary also commended former President, Mohamed Abdullahi “Farmajo” for preserving the country’s emerging democratic tradition and facilitating a smooth handover to the new President.
Mohamud won the presidency again in the third round voting by parliamentarians on Sunday in Mogadishu.
The 66-year-old, who ruled between 2012-17 beat incumbent President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo by 214-110 votes in a tense election. He was sworn in soon thereafter by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Bashe Yusuf Ahmed.
