
Serena Hotel will send all staff on unpaid leave for the month of June until further notice.
This is because of the ongoing covid-19 pandemic which has adversely affected all business operations in the country.
“All staff will from 1st June 2020 take unpaid leave until further notice. However, for the month of June 2020, staff will be paid an allowance of Kshs10, 000 only,” reads the memo from Serena Hotel Managing Director.
Moreover, essential staff who are required to be on duty on a regular basis will be paid 30% of their salary for the month of June 2020.
The staff who will be working on rotational basis to keep the properties serviced, will be paid for the days worked only.
Additionally, the company will continue to provide for medical services within the existing network of providers.
The hard economic times brought about by the covid-19 pandemic has made many businesses close down.
Fairmont Norfolk and Fairmont Mara Safari Club closed down business last week and fired all their employees.

“It is regrettable that our hotels, Fairmont the Norfolk and Fairmont Mara Safari Club have since ceased their operations. This is a spiral effect of the covid-19 pandemic and the recent flooding of Fairmont Mara Safari Club,” Fairmont Manager Mehdi Morad said.
All Fairmont employees will be issued with the termination letters by end of June 5, 2020.
Employees with less than 5 years’ experience will be paid one month’s salary in lieu or notice.
Employees with more than 5 years’ experience will be paid gratuity as per the CBA.
Serena and Fairmont hotels have joined many other companies that have closed down or terminated some employees to survive amid the pandemic.
Some employees have been forced to work at home.
Others have been sent on unpaid leave while others have been terminated.
