Movement within Nairobi metropolitan area has not been prohibited, State House has clarified.
In his earlier address on Monday, President Uhuru Kenyatta had mistakenly said that movement within Nairobi had been banned for 21 days, causing confusion among Kenyans.
But in a rejoinder Chief of Staff at the Office of the President Nzioka Waita sent a tweet saying movement within Nairobi remains.
“Please note :- Movement WITHIN the Nairobi Metro Area as defined in the Legal G.N. is PERMITTED subject to existing curfew,wearing of face masks & social distancing. What is PROHIBITED is movement IN TO & OUT OF the gazetted area for the period of 21 days effective 7.00pm tonight”.
To rectify one of teh biggst goofs in President Kenyatta’s communication, especially during a crisis, State House sent an official communication and said: “As announced by the Head of State: Movement within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area is permitted except for the national curfew period of between 7pm and 5am”.
“What is prohibited is the movement IN and OUT of the Gazetted areas for the period of 21 days effective 7.00pm tonight,” State House said.
President Kenyatta ordered cessation of movement out and into Nairobi metropolitan, Kwale, Kilifi and Mombasa to contain the spread of coronavirus.
The cessation of movement in Nairobi starts today (Monday) at 7pm, while that of the other counties will begin on Wednesday.
Uhuru said a majority of people who have contracted the disease are Nairobi residents, Kilifi, Kwale and Mombasa counties.
The President said 82 per cent of Covid-19 have been in Nairobi and 14 per cent have been reported in the Coast counties.
“The movement within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area and the Counties of Kilifi, Kwale and Mombasa shall continue subject to the nationwide curfew,” Uhuru said.
Uhuru said there shall be a cessation of all movement by road, rail or air in and out of Nairobi Metropolitan area as well as the counties of Kilifi, Kwale and Mombasa counties.
