Kenya’s High Commissioner to the UK Manoah Esipisu on Thursday said this is “to bring cheer and express solidarity with frontline NHS workers”.

“In each bouquet, a message of encouragement and hope from HE President Uhuru Kenyatta: “Whatever the adversity, no matter the foe, we shall triumph together.” This is in Kenya’s true spirit of solidarity and partnership,” Esipisu said.

On April 25, The Standard reported that Kenya had sent over 300 bouquets to London in a show of solidarity with a country that remains its prime floriculture market amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
This is through the Flowers of Hope initiative by the Kenya Private Alliance, which it launched on March 30 under its Economic Framework for Covid-19 response.
“[The] Campaign is informed by realities brought forth by how Covid-19 is impacting world economies. Businesses in Kenya, particularly cut-flower industry is confronting harsh reality of the virus, which puts in peril one of Kenyan most successful & internationally acclaimed sector,” Kepsa said on Thursday.
The campaign started in Nairobi with distribution of flowers in Kenyatta National Hospital, Mbagathi Hospital, Pumwani Maternity Hospital, Mama Lucy hospital, Mathare hospital and Spinal Injury hospital.
The initiative stems from a committee set up by President Uhuru Kenyatta and chaired by Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiangi that has brought together Kepsa, Kenya Association of Manufacturers, Kenya Airways and the Kenya Flower Council. KEPSA members including Elgon Kenya Limited, Flamingo Flowers Limited and others are also in the committee.
According to the Kenya Flower Council, sales of cut flowers in overseas markets are below 35 per cent of what they would expect at this time of the year. This is mostly driven by the European and United Kingdom markets whose local sales in florists have declined to almost zero.
“Flower plants need to be kept alive and healthy, otherwise they will die and the industry will lose its ability to supply flowers when the markets open up. It is on the basis of the need to support our front line of defence and encourage them while also protecting over four million livelihoods that this campaign was born,” Kepsa added.

Esipisu in a statement said Kenyan flowers are a prominent feature on the shelves of major supermarkets in the UK, which remain open, ensuring a lifeline for 200,000 workers responsible for growing some five billion stems of flowers a year mainly for export.

“Kenya is a leading exporter of flowers to Europe, including the UK, with a market share of about 35% but the Covid-19 crisis has deeply hit the market, jeopardizing horticulture, a huge foreign exchange earner. Despite all this, we are hopeful, for better days ahead,” he added.

UK High Commissioner to Kenya Jane Marriott thanked Kenya for the flowers.

“Kenya-UK Strategic Partnership goes from strength to strength: thank you @StateHouse @MEsipisu for the beautiful flowers to cheers up UK frontline workers in the COVID-19 response,” she tweeted.

The consignment was flown by the national carrier Kenya Airways Friday night and received by Flamingo Limited UK.
