• EACC is investigating a controversial property deal between Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and the Kenya Railways pension scheme.
• President Uhuru Kenyatta has seconded seven senior KDF personnel to the newly created Nairobi Metropolitan Service.
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has sought refuge in the scriptures.
This follows another storm that risks sending back on the dock over corruption, and to wrestle City Hall from him. “They have the army, the police and government agencies to intimidate me but I have God and His people as my only Shield and Saviour. May your will be done,” Sonko posed on his social media platforms.
“May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all now & forevermore. Amen. May the Lord protect us all and our families against the deadly Covid-19 pandemic. I wish you all a very very nice day full of blessings,” Sonko prayed.
This is as the Star revealed that the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) is investigating a controversial property deal between Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and the Kenya Railways pension scheme. The daily reported that the EACC is pushing to have some of his assets forfeited to the state over corruption.
“Sale agreements seen by the Star show that Sonko’s family is buying the property in the upmarket Upper Hill at Sh498.5 million. The property is situated along Matumbato Road — right behind the five-star Radisson Blu Hotel — which is one of Nairobi’s most sought-after addresses,” the Star reported.
Sonko has been operating from the estate since he was barred from accessing City Hall over a Sh357 million graft case. The City governor reportedly paid Sh144.6 million in just a week when the contract was inked on April 30 last year.
“The deal was inked by Sonko and the former team of trustees of Kenya Railways staff retirement benefits scheme—Corporate and Trust Pension Services Ltd. The trustees manage the fund on behalf of Kenya Railways retirees,” Star says.
The two parcels sold to the governor are adjacent to each other and were excised from LR No 209-6507 measuring 0.7415 acres and 0.5003 acres respectively. EACC has now moved in to freeze any further transaction on the property.
Even as this happens, in a move to further push away Sonko from City Hall, President Uhuru Kenyatta has seconded seven senior KDF personnel to the newly created Nairobi Metropolitan Service. It is headed by Major General Mohamed Badi.
“The Defence Council approved secondment to Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) and Ministry of Health (MOH) of the General/Senior/Officers,” Ibrahim Mohamed, the secretary for Defence Council, said in an undated letter.
Out of the seven officers seconded to NMS, four are from the Kenya Army and three from the Air Force. The army officers are Brigadier F, Laura, Major J. V. Mbithi, Major A. N. Nyakundi and Major J. K. Njoroge.
This comes shortly after Sonko threatened to terminate the Transfer Deed of four key functions to the national government he signed on February 25. They are Health, Transport, Public Works, Panning and Auxiliary Services.
He accusing officials at the Office of the President of his woes, and blames it on his association with Deput President William Ruto.
“Those haters in the OP who’re convincing the President that the transfer of functions deeds has brought my administration and political life to an end wameze wembe na wasage glass wakunywe, I still have a political life and I MUST finish and launch all my development projects,” Sonko tweeted on April 29.
