Kenya will intensify its campaign for the United Nations Security Council non-permanent seat at the 74th Session of the UN General Assembly, State House has said.

Spokesperson Kanze Dena in a statement on Tuesday said President Uhuru Kenyatta will join other heads of state and government in New York after his trip to Singapore.

“While in the US, the President is expected to intensify Kenya’s campaign for one of the non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council (UNSC) for which the country recently secured the backing of the African Union,” she said.

The UNSC elections are scheduled for June next year for the 2021 to 2022 membership period.

Kenya won the AU endorsement after a second round of voting by the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC), after garnering 37 votes against Djibouti’s 13 during a session by the 54-member regional group in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in August.

Kenya on September 16 launched its campaigns for the position, which will be anchored on 10 key points.

They are building bridges, peacekeeping and support operations, regional peace and security, counterterrorism, women peace and security, youth empowerment, humanitarian action, justice, human rights and democracy and environment and climate change.

Meanwhile, President Kenyatta will speak at the Singapore Summit, a forum that brings together governments, private sector and thought leaders from around the world to discuss global trends in business, finance and geopolitics, and the impact on regional and global growth, prosperity and stability.

It is scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

“Established in 2012, the Singapore Summit is a platform for shared Asian perspectives on global issues, and one where ideas on deeper partnerships between the public, private and people sectors are developed and shared,” the statement read in part.

The President will speak about Kenya’s growth trajectory and opportunities for growth in East Africa.
