Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru’s impeachment will be decided by a team of 11 senators and not a committee of the whole house.

This decision was reached after 45 senators voted in favour of the 11-member team while 14 voted against it. One senator abstained.

Members who will serve in the team include Philip Mpaaye (Kajiado), Cleophas Malala (Kakamega), Beatrice Kwamboka (Nominated), Stewart Madzayo (Kilifi), Judith Pareno (Nominated) and Moses Kajwang (HomaBay).

Other senators include Abshiro Halake, Michael Mbito (Trans-Nzoia), Beth Mugo, Anuar Loitiptip (Lamu) and Mwangi Paul Githiomi (Nyandarua).

Speaker Ken Lusaka gave the team 10 days to investigate the charges levelled against Waiguru. He also gave them the same duration to table a report in the house.

“The hearing of charges for the proposed removal from office of a Governor is one of the most important functions of the Senate under the constitution. I urge all senators to exercise the highest level of responsibility on this matter,” Lusaka said before the senators voted.

Siaya senator James Orengo said some senators were not seeking justice in Waiguru’s case, but were looking for revenge.

Waiguru’s impeachment motion will be heard by the 11-member team and her fate will be decided.
