Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has appointed Kenyan journalist Patience Nyange as its new spokesperson.
Nyange, who was until January 2024 the Executive Director of Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK), succeeds Nuur Mohamud Sheekh, who left the position in January after three years.
IGAD made the announcement on its social media accounts on Tuesday.
She will now speak for the regional organization and Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu.
“We are thrilled to announce and welcome @NyangePatience to the #IGAD family effective March 2024. Patience Nyange joins our team as the Spokesperson, Office of the Executive Secretary, H.E. @DrWorkneh.
“With her many years of experience, expertise, and passion for effective communication, we are poised to elevate our voice and mission not only in the region but globally. Welcome aboard, we wish you all the best in your journey with us,” IGAD said on X, former Twitter.
Reacting to the appointment, Nyange termed it as “the Lord’s doing and beautiful”.
Nyange took the AMWIK role on November 15, 2022 but left in January 2024 amid a leadership tussle in the organisation.
AMWIK is a national independent, non-profit, membership organization for women in media and brings together over 300 women in the media from different parts of Kenya. It works with other media associations and community networks across the 47 Kenyan counties.
Nyange has also previously worked as Board Member of the Media Council of Kenya, an assistant director at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights and as Communication advisor at the Ministry of Devolution and Planning, then headed by Anne Waiguru.
According to her LinkedIn page, Nyange has also been an associate broadcast mentor with BBC Media Action, a journalist with the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) and as a presenter and producer at Baraka FM.
She also tried her hand at politics in the 202 General Election, unsuccessfully running for governor in Taita Taveta County.
