Waiguru said she has full confidence in her legal team, adding that she believes her response is sound.

“Let’s allow the Senate to do its work. I have confidence in the rule and believe that truth and justice will be our shield and defender,” Waiguru said.

There are already questions on whether the 11-member Senate committee selected to investigate Waiguru will be able to go through the tonnes of documents submitted by the governor in just five days.

The committee is expected to decide Waiguru’s fate on June. 26.

There are claims that the committee was set up – instead of the plenary – to sanitise the governor.

During the Tuesday debate in the Senate, some legislators, led by Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, opposed the formation of the committee, saying the people of Kirinyaga wanted the plenary route following precedence set in former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu’s case.

“The senators who are here know very well that if a committee is chosen and for whatever reason, they go and clear a governor, that is the end of the matter. It will never come to this House,” Murkomen said.
